Books

The one item every charter in BVI needs is The Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands.  Undoubtedly this guide is the most thorough compilation of everything the islands have to offer.  We also like Fodor's U.S. & British Virgin Islands and guide for their more terrestrial based descriptions.  If you are interested in snorkeling and diving there are some good guides below to help plan the trip.  A few interesting nautical reads are included as well.  If you like true stories that are more amazing than fiction, try Endurance which tells the story of Shackleton's ill fated voyage to the South Pole.  Adrift is another incredible story of survival almost impossible to believe.  Longitude tells the story of a man's forty year struggle to find the solution to "the longitude problem"

The following books are recommended by us to both plan and enjoy during your BVI charter.  Click the link on this list or the pictures below to purchase directly from Amazon.

Travel Planning books:

-2024 The Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands - The Bible to your BVI charter trip.  If you don't have it buy it now.

-Fodor's U.S. & British Virgin Islands (Full-color Travel Guide) - Another good BVI travel although not focused on BVI cruising.

-British Virgin Islands Dive Guide BVI Waterproof Map - Although not a book, this waterproof map is a nice planning tool.  It includes not only Dive sites but also anchorages, sights to see, beaches, fish identification and much more.

-Virgin Islands Reef Creatures Guide Franko Maps Laminated Fish Card 4" x 6" - Small and waterproof fish identification guide.

Recommended Nautical Reads:

-Endurance - Tells the story of Shackleton's ill fated voyage to the South Pole.  It is a truly amazing story made more so by the fact that it is true.  Read this one!

-Longitude - We take it for granted now but in the 18th century, the longitude problem prevented mariners from knowing their true location once losing sight of land.  Read how one man solved this and changed navigation forever.

-Fifty Places to Sail Before You Die - A beautiful coffee table book that makes a great gift.

- Adrift - Another tale of survival.  After his sloop capsized at sea the author was forced to survive alone at sea.

-Sailing Alone Around the World - Written over 100 years ago, the author tells the story of his solo circumnavigation of the globe, the first ever!  Its a classic sailing story that's still a great read.

-Not On Any Map: One Virgin Island, Two Catastrophic Hurricanes, and the True Meaning of Paradise While not about the British Virgin Islands, this recommended book tells about the twin hurricanes that came through the area and struggle that were endured in the recovery.
